Richmond, July 24, 2014 -The Commonwealth Long Term Care Foundation today announced the award of $54,000 in Regirer Nurse Scholarships to 38 recipients employed in Virginia long term care facilities.  Each recipient will receive $1,500 toward the cost of their nursing education.  To receive the award each recipient completed an extensive application, were personally interviewed by a member of the foundation’s nurse scholarship committee and agreed to work in long term care after graduation.

The scholarships are named for Walter and Maria Teresa who as members of the Virginia Health Care Association (VHCA) led efforts to improve access to long term care education for career professionals.  The Regirer Nursing Scholarship Program is designed to promote and support quality of care and to enhance the educational level of nurses currently working in VHCA member facilities.  The Regirers were leaders in the VHCA which is an affiliated organization of the Commonwealth Long Term Care Foundation.

Since the inception of the Commonwealth Long Term Care Foundation in 1997 it has awarded Regirer Nursing Scholarships totaling $518,975 to 381 scholarship recipients. The Foundation is organized and operated exclusively for charitable, scientific or educational purposes.

Ms. Katrina Pergues, a Certified Nursing Assistant at River View on the Appomattox Health & Rehab in Hopewell, is a recipient of this year’s Regirer Nurse Scholarship. She plans to further her education to become a Licensed Practical Nurse.
